Worried About the Job Market After Graduation?

By Todd B Bavol

As you enter your final year at college, your degree is nearly in your hand. You are thinking about and planning for amazing things in your career. You are even more excited about all you've learned and all you can do with it. The problem is, the job market isn't what it used to be. Now, many graduates face the grim prospect that they may not find the job of their dreams right after graduation. Even though that's true, it is a good idea to plan now, even before you have a diploma in hand, to land that big job.

What's It Really Like?

There is a significant demand for fresh graduates in some fields. That includes the areas of education, health fields, and science. However, some areas are struggling significantly. In the areas of the arts and humanities, for example, you will find it hard to find a position you want even with your bachelor's degree in hand.
According to the Huffington Post, one in two college graduates are jobless right now or they are underemployed, working in fields that are less than ideal for their long-term career goals. Keeping this in mind, the college graduate (or soon-to-be one) needs to focus on what they can do right now to see success when May does come around.

Tips for Making It Work

With the economy and job market still wavering, many employers are holding off hiring college graduates for open positions. Why do that when there are skilled professionals who are looking for an opportunity and have experience? As a graduate, there are things you can do to make your name matter.
* Network now. Do not put it off until the final semester of your final year of education. You need to work on finding people in the field to get to know now so that they remember you.
* Get active in the industry now. No matter if you start a blog to make a name for yourself or you work to develop a professional network based on your community activities, get involved now.
* Consider expanding your experiences. This may mean taking on intern work or working for less than you think you should. The key here is the experience you will gain.

As a job applicant in a trying market, college graduates need to be well versed in using social media and marketing to help advance their skills. Doing so can make all of the difference in your ability to land a job when you do graduate.
