Job Interview Technique - Linking Past Experience to the New Job

When you are on a job interview, you'll be asked a great number of questions. You'll need to provide information about your job skills and your working experience. That's easy to do, you think. However, as you sit across from the hiring manager, you may want to brush up on one of the most common job interview techniques that people make a mistake with - being able to relate previous job experience to the current job they are applying for.
     Can You Do It?
Do you know how to relate your previous job experience to the role that you are applying for right now? It is not easy to do that. In fact, when it comes to job interview techniques, this is one of those questions that a hiring manager may ask simply to see how you handle a touch interview question. Here are some things to keep in mind through this process.
• What job skills did you learn at your previous job that would relate to the current position you are applying for? Be specific here. Your job skills are your most important asset after all.
• What leadership roles or other tasks did you handle at that previous job that will relate? For example, if you managed a team of people there, you handled most of the same challenges that you will find at a new job with the same type of setup.
• What job duties did you have there that will transfer to this position? For example, were you responsible for a specific task? Were you the one to handle the same type of job there as you are applying for here? This makes this process easier to do.
What if you cannot find a way to make this relate to you? It's a good idea to be honest about this (though you will want to do some research and some hard testing to ensure that you do have a few examples to provide.) Be sure to state that you are applying for a new position or a more challenging one because you feel you are ready to do so.
When it comes to job interview techniques like this, it is common for a hiring manager to be interested in how you answer the question not necessarily, in what you say. In other words, if you cannot answer, that doesn't look as good as if you do have some thoughts spelled out already in this area.
